Arousal & Tantric Sexuality

What is “Tantric sex”?

Tantric Sexuality generally refers to a process of integration between Eastern spiritual mind focus and a physical sexual connection between lovers. “Mind-Body” connection is one way to think of it, but really that’s too simplistic. Tantra is as much about being aware of your own mind-body connection as it is about reaching out and blending intimately with the mind and body of your lover.

Tantra’s current popularity stems from the arousal power it generates. Many of the underlying techniques (conscious breathing, awareness-massage, setting the environment to support a peaceful but concentrated meditation, turning off the cell phone, etc.) directly influence the part of the human nervous system which is responsible for the base of sexual arousal (the parasympathetic nervous system). When practitioners of Tantra are following these techniques, they are essentially “tuning” their nervous system to achieve a more powerful state of arousal.

Tantric sexual practice can be done by individuals to enhance their own sexual perceptions and power of arousal, and is highly recommended for anyone looking to (re)connect sexually with themselves. Tantra can also be practiced by couples. Couple work requires a level of trust between partners that is earned as lovers become more open and aware of their partner’s arousal. Whether you wish to practice with a partner or not, many of the exercises begin with your personal sexual mind-body connection, and you’ll find more information in our resources.
