This very visual, friendly guide covers consent, communication, anatomy, self-discovery, dating, plenty of techniques for play and pleasure, as well as how that all comes together and what it means to you and your relationships. These concepts are introduced broadly, then given life through comics, examples of dialog, and input from other sex educators and readers. We love that the specific suggestions and skills are embedded in encouragement to reflect, ask questions, and do real work of authentically navigating the world of sex and relationships. The chapters are interspersed with a story about two female folks who are taking a road trip together filled with sexy adventures and relationship dynamics. It’s like having erotica and an instructional guide all in one!
We first heard author Allison Moon talk about “Girl Sex” as a guest on a podcast, and we fell for her dorky charm and creative metaphors. Her book delivers this refreshing, balanced style, too: sometimes silly, but incredibly smart and sincere. Allison is the anti ‘sex-pert;’ her brand of sex education is built on story-telling, crowdsourcing, and collaboration. Her intention to “create the book I would have wanted when I was coming out 17 years ago” really comes through in the fun, thoughtful format and warmly enthusiastic voice. Reading this book feels more like paging through a beautiful gift from someone who really cares about you than reading a one-size-fits all how-to manual. The language and graphics are incredibly inclusive and positive: you’ll see images of all kinds of body types and gender expression, discussion of intersex bodies, transitioning or transitioned bodies, and an overall message of respecting yourself and others as unique, changing individuals.
This guide is written from a very inclusive, queer-friendly perspective and would be applicable to any person who is or likes to sleep with female-bodied people. Girl Sex 101 is an especially great book for any person who is discovering what they want and who they are sexually or is entering a new phase in that journey: deeper exploration, coming out, re-entering the dating scene, etc. We think this is an equally useful and delightful resource for finding your way at any stage: “Girl Sex 101 is about honoring the sexuality of the girl you were, the girl you are, or the girl you are becoming.”
